The British Prime Minister has, it is reported, described political opponents who do not agree with his proposal to extend our involvement in the Syrian conflict as “terrorist sympathisers”.
I am not alone in being both shocked and angry.
I am not a terrorist sympathiser. I have read, carefully, the cases that he and others have made, for and against the action he proposes. I am not convinced by his arguments, This makes me, I believe, a citizen with an informed viewpoint – not a terrorist sympathiser.

One might hypothesize that the real seeds of the problem were planted years and years ago when (1) big-oil decided to support the Saudis who promoted the Wahhabist school, and (2) the state of Israel was established without due consideration to Palestinian claims. Sending troops to Syria doesn’t solve any of that.
Caveat (important in these days) – I am not anti-Israel, pro-terrorist, anti-Islam, pro-Palestine … whatever. I am just trying to make some sense of it all.

It has, as you say, very long roots but I can’t see how we are making any of it any better. I just watched a short video by a French journalist who was held captive by Daesh or whatever we’re calling them now – very eloquently he says that what the West is doing is exactly what the terrorists want. They hate the flood of refugees leaving. They hate the welcome shown to them in (parts of) Europe. I should stop watching the news, watch cute videos of baby pandas instead …

Cameron is just scared he will lose the vote. He doesn’t really believe anyone who votes against is a terrorist sympathiser. I too do not believe bombing Syria will help, and will just make matters worse, but It is ludicrous to say that makes me a friend of terrorists….. Hey ho, cute baby pandas, or hamsters, it is!

I’m afraid that today’s leaders are probably too young to recall that the saturation bombing of Hanoi and the Ho Chi Minh trail simply hardened the resolve of the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong. The air campaign in Syria and Iraq will no doubt kill countless civilians and provide fodder for the ISIS recruitment campaign. It’s only a matter of time before one of our planes is shot down and the pilot taken hostage and used for propaganda purposes.

Sadly I think you are spot on.The quote about Ben Tre city I cited in my last post chilled me to the marrow. And I hope we don’t see a service man or woman taken hostage but …
Our leaders all pontificate about learning from history and never do. It’s the same old same old. War. What is it good for? Increasing the profits of the arms dealers and keeping lots of people in employment. Sickening thing here is party politics being played with this issue.

Nothing is black or white except to politicians wanting to gain support for whatever it is they want to do.
It used to be taught that blurting out emotionally charged words/phrases were the sign of a weak mind with an even weaker argument. Name calling is childish and counterproductive
Analysis must to be done – and history recalled and closely examined.

I don’t understand why the PM couldn’t just say sorry – he’s top man, it’s hardly going to knock him off his podium overnight.
The haste with which everything is done, the need to be instant, is leading to all sorts of slipshod work and not just in spelling and so on. This week our media – including the BBC – reported on the intimidation of a female Labour MP by an angry crowd outside her home. The story was completely inaccurate. The peaceful vigil was outside her office, with families, priests and imams, and the vandalism of her office also reported was post-it notes stuck on windows with messages of peace – or at least so the organiser said. I have only one source for that so can’t claim it is accurate. The original misleading story, widely reported by the media as fact, was based on a post by one person (whom no-one now seeems to be able to find) on a Facebook page. Never mind history (and they don’t) – mind fact checking and having reliable sources. Time to watch All the President’s Men again!

Hear Hear! if you’re not with us you’re against us… it’s the same on both sides of the water. I guess there will be a huge amount of collateral damage,not good for anyone. stick with the cute cuddlies, and at least it will be a great place to avoid all the nonsense. ;^) ❤ ❤ ❤
